Things To See In One Day From Mammoth Lakes

There is so much to see and do in the Mammoth Lakes area. Below is only the tip of the iceberg regarding things you can do in a day here. Remember to have fun on your day out!

California Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center

A great place to start is the California Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center. It’s especially ideal for those who don’t know where to start. Here, you can learn about area points of interest, history, interpretive displays, and programs. A U.S. Forest Service Ranger, National Park Service Ranger, or Mammoth Lakes Tourism Information Agent can aid you in planning something that suits your needs. The bookstore also has a wealth of information.

Wild Willy’s Hot Spring

Find time to relax at Wild Willy’s Hot Spring. It’s just outside the city limits and is a soothing place to end your day trip. Afternatinity, this is a great way to start your day trip by arriving in the early morning hours and watching the sun creep up to illuminate the mountains. When you arrive, you’ll trek across a wooden boardwalk where, at the end, you will find two hot springs.

Laws Railroad Museum & Historical Site

One place that is typically a hit for families with young children is the Laws Railroad Museum & Historical Site. This is mainly because if you arrive on time, you can ride their self-propelled railcars, or “Doodlebugs.” The museum has plenty of authentic exhibits from a time long gone. Get up close with boxcars, cabooses, and original railroad tracks, as well as a peek at what life was for pioneers, ranchers, and miners 150 years ago.

Owens Valley Distilling Company

Sample some of the best spirits in the area at Owens Valley Distilling Company. This is a phenomenal place to sit down for a drink (or two) and a soft pretzel or sandwich. The food menu is limited, but every item stands out. But you are probably stopping here for the cocktails. There is a superb selection of drinks like their Bishop Mule, Long Valley Iced Tea, or neat pours/on-the-rocks drinks.

Bonus Stop: Crowley Lake Stone Columns

The Crowley Lake Stone Columns isn’t too far. This unique and picturesque natural attraction is along Highway 395. However, it isn’t easy to see up close, so if you are traveling with someone with limited mobility, perhaps skip this one and move along to the next stop. But if you have the stamina or an ATV rental, you can get up close and see these pale columns firsthand.
